Vales Nightingale Wood isn't the book Stella Gibbons is known for but I think it's her best. It's been described as a Cinderella story, but it's so much more. There are two main couples to focus on but it's also about people's individual needs and desires. This one I liked quite a bit, but it wasn't nearly as outright satirical and laugh-out-loud-in-public funny as Cold Comfort Farm. Nightgale Wood is entertaining, well written, a bit cliche, but Gibbons took the stereotypical novel and gave it a bit of self-awareness. The story knows it follow the standard storyline, and the voice points out its own silliness.

I end up liking this book very much, for its wonderful social commentary in the middle. Be aware that the scene setting at the start may feel a bit tedious, but it is necessary for the events that unfold. The ending had too much telling & not enough showing for me, but what I liked was that I didn't predict the correct ending for anyone! The writing is SO funny. "It is difficult to make a dull garden, but Mr. Wither had succeeded." "Mrs. Wither had come in, but he took no notice of her because he had seen her before." Gibbons is also excellent at describing nature. The beauty of the scenery is felt by the reader & the characters who feel so strongly. Some of them want simple things like a dog. A very funny, very smart novel about upper-middle-class life in late 1930's England. Two families, separated by a woodland where The Hermit, the town drunk and squatter lives, come together in unlikely ways when Viola, the Withers' widowed daughter-in-law, arrives and chaos starts brewing. Lots of wit, some tongue-in-cheek moments and just enough sadness to make all of the lovely bits sting just a bit more. If you liked Cold Comfort Farm you will probably like this one. The economy and population of Swindon expanded rapidly through the latter half of the 19th century largely due to its potential as a transport hub. First came the Wilts & Berks canal from Abingdon-on-Thames to reach the Kennet and Avon canal in mid-Wiltshire. This (shown in blue on the map) passes south of the village and originally ran through into Swindon town centre. Nightingales are migrant breeders, arriving in the UK from mid to late April. Males then sing to defend territories and attract mates until early June or so.I really like this book a lot because of all the morals behind it. ‘The Secret of Nightingale Wood’ is about a twelve year old girl whose family have moved to the countryside after her mother got ill due to her brother’s death. The ‘Hope House’ that they moved into was holding some secrets and mystery. One of the sweets that Henrietta (the twelve year old girl) discovers is to do with ‘Nightingale Wood’. Henrietta makes many friends along the way; on her mission to cure her mum and also help her magical friends. This has become one of my favourite books because the main character shows a lot of determination when she proves some of the people wrong. I think that, in the future, I will read a lot more books written by this author. The woodland floor comes alive in spring with flowering plants, many of which are closely associated with ancient woodland.
